How to Use Uzurv to Request Specific Uber Drivers
You already know that on-demand ridesharing services, like Uber and Lyft, have revolutionized how people get around in cities. Instead of calling a cab company, waiting half an hour for the car to arrive, and paying high rates, you can hail a ride, jump into the nearest available vehicle and pay less.
But there are still a few things Uber and Lyft can’t do. Prefer a particular driver? There’s no way to request they pick you up. Have a small child with you? Uber and Lyft car-seat service is available only in New York City (as of August 2017). And if you have a disability that requires special accommodations, using a ridesharing service can be tough.
A service called Uzurv promises to make Uber and Lyft better by giving passengers more power. But how does it work? And what else is changing in the world of ride-sharing?
How to make a Lyft or Uber reservation in advance
Uber now allows riders to schedule a ride up to 30 days in advance. Set your pickup date and time, your pickup location and destination, and you’ll get a fare estimate. Uber will send you a reminder ahead of time, and you can cancel, without paying a fee, up to five minutes after your ride’s on the way. Uber does not guarantee the ride, however; if no driver’s in your area, it will notify you.
You can also pre-book a Lyft ride, but there are a few more limitations. You can only schedule a ride up to seven days in advance, and if you cancel within 30 minutes of the driver’s arrival, you’ll pay a $10 cancellation fee.
Neither Lyft nor Uber allows riders to request specific drivers or vehicles, however. That’s where Uzurv comes in.
How Uzurv works
Uzurv is a stand-alone reservation app for Lyft and Uber that lets users browse driver profiles — which include photos and vehicle info — and schedule a ride with a specific driver. If you’ve used Uzurv before, you can select favorite drivers.
Uzurv also gives riders the ability to request specific services or amenities.
- Want a large trunk for all your luggage or groceries? Done.
- How about a car seat in your Uber? Done.
- Looking for a bilingual driver? Done.
- Need a pet-friendly driver who’s willing to drive you and your Great Dane to the vet? Done.
You can also use the app to chat with your driver ahead of time about any special needs you have, and add an incentive — basically a tip in advance — to reward drivers for accepting an early-morning, late-night or remote pickup.
It costs $0.99 to make a Lyft or Uber reservation on Uzurv, which is expected to rise to $2.95 after the initial launch period. There’s also a strict cancellation policy. If a rider cancels less than two hours before the scheduled pickup time, the rider will be charged Uzurv’s service fee rate that was set at the time the reservation was made, as well as a $5 fee. Drivers will be charged the service fee when they cancel, plus a $5 fee if it’s less than seven hours before the scheduled pickup.
What else is new for rideshare passengers?
Lyft and Uber are constantly tweaking their services to make drivers and passengers happier. In 2017, Uber gave riders the ability to tip drivers through the app. (Lyft already allows tipping.) Uber is also reducing the fee-free cancellation window to two minutes after making a request, and charging riders if they keep drivers waiting. Lyft introduced a feature that suggests riders move to the nearest convenient pickup location, so drivers don’t have to navigate one-way streets or tricky traffic.
