A reliable, resilient and no-frills compact truck, the Ford Ranger has been full of stops and starts. The first was born in 1965 and was produced until 1981. Production was halted again in 2011 following some poor safety ratings and falling sales. Truck-seekers were instead pointed towards the F-150 or Expedition.

The Ford Ranger was always known more for dependability than cutting-edge features. But what the Ranger lacked in technology, it made up for in reliability. The workhorse Ranger is known for working over odometers by routinely racking up 200K or more miles without putting up a fuss.

The 2011 Ford Ranger received mixed crash-test ratings from the NHTSA. This report card included a two out of five-star rating for several front tests and two five-star ratings for side tests. However, the overall rating was two stars. Many of the older used Ford Rangers are still out on the road which didn’t come with all the advanced safety features of the new model.

After yet another rebrand, Ford is bringing back the Ranger; bolder and better than ever. There are three levels to choose from; XL, XLT, and LARIAT. Gone are the days of old-fashioned technology, the new Ranger promise lane-assist, pre-collision assist and their flagship FordPass Connect WiFi.
