Embrace Pet Insurance offers just one type of plan that covers accidents and illnesses. But pet parents will find plenty of options for customizing Embrace’s single plan, including three reimbursement rates, six annual limit choices, and annual deductibles ranging from $100 to $1,000.
Add-on options include coverage for exam fees and prescription drugs. And Embrace’s optional wellness rewards membership will reimburse you up to your selected amount annually for routine veterinary care.
Here’s everything you need to know about Embrace to decide if it’s the right pet insurance for your four-legged family member.
Embrace offers broad coverage for several common hereditary and congenital conditions.
Plans include robust dental coverage for issues like gingivitis and periodontal disease — up to $1,000 per year.
Depending on where you live, your Embrace policy might have a six-month waiting period before it covers orthopedic conditions for dogs.[1]
Our Take On Embrace
Embrace stands out for its flexible, easy-to-customize coverage. You can adjust your deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit to match your budget. And its accident and illness plan covers a wide range of conditions, including hereditary, chronic, and even dental issues.
You can use any licensed vet in the U.S., and the claims process is simple — the company pays out most reimbursements in about 10–15 business days. We also like that Embrace may cover curable pre-existing conditions as long as your pet meets certain criteria.
But Embrace isn’t a good choice for pet parents with senior cats and dogs. It doesn’t offer accident and illness coverage for pets 15 and older — but you can still get an Embrace accident-only plan.
And Embrace’s Wellness Rewards add-on might not be adequate routine care coverage for every pet.
Embrace
Lots of customization options
Covers dental issues and preventable conditions
Wellness plan includes discounts from popular brands
Relatively expensive wellness plan
No coverage for prescription food
Pets 15 and older can only get accident coverage
Embrace Pet Insurance offers a single, highly customizable pet health insurance plan that includes coverage for accidents, illnesses, dental issues, chronic conditions, preventable conditions, and more. Optional add-on coverages include things like diagnostic exam fees and prescription drugs.
You can also add a wellness plan that covers routine care, including preventive dental cleaning.
Embrace Pet Insurance Plans and Coverage Options
Embrace offers one main type of pet insurance: an accident and illness plan. But our quote testing showed that Embrace has age limits for enrollment.
For dogs and cats 15 and older, Embrace limits policy options to accident-only.[2] And if you want an accident-only plan for a younger pet, you must also include illness coverage.
Accident and illness coverage
Embrace’s comprehensive standard policy covers a wide range of treatments for accidents and illnesses, including breed-specific, congenital, and chronic conditions, including:
Vet exam and consultation fees
Diagnostic tests and imaging (i.e., MRIs and X-rays)
Surgeries and hospital stays
Emergency and specialty care
Prescription medications
Behavioral therapy
Rehab and follow-up care
Prosthetic limbs, mobility aids, and devices
Dental illnesses and injuries (up to $1,000 per year)
You can enroll your dog or cat as young as 6 weeks old, and coverage continues for life — but coverage may change slightly as your pet ages.
Accident-only coverage
Embrace covers only injuries from accidents for older pets, not illnesses. The plan caps reimbursement at $5,000 annually.[2]
Embrace’s accident-only plan covers things like:
Accident-related exam fees
Foreign body ingestion (limits apply)
Broken bones
Car accidents
Accidental poisoning
Bloat
Broken teeth
Animal bites
Cuts and lacerations
Embrace says you should consider the accident-only policy if your pet is 15 or older or if they’ve been diagnosed with or shown symptoms of diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, FIV, or FeLV.
Optional Wellness Rewards
Embrace also offers Wellness Rewards, a separate reimbursement plan for routine and preventive care that you can add to both the accident and illness and the accident-only plans. It’s not technically insurance, but it can help offset everyday expenses like wellness exams, vaccines, spaying or neutering, dental cleanings, and more.
You’ll pay an extra fee to add this to your policy, but the membership option you choose — $300, $500, or $700 per year — makes funds available to you right away.[3] You can use them as you like, as long as you spend them on eligible care.
Here’s a comparison of Embrace pet insurance plans and add-on coverages:
Policy Type | What It Covers | Who It’s For |
---|---|---|
Accident and illness | Accidents, illnesses, breed-specific conditions, dental, surgery, and more | Most dogs and cats younger than 15 |
Accident-only | Accidents and injuries (not illness) | Senior pets, pets with some pre-existing conditions, and pets with symptoms of certain conditions |
Wellness Rewards (add-on) | Routine and preventive care (wellness exams, vaccines, dental cleaning, etc.) | Any pet, as a plan supplement |
Exam fees | Reimburses exam fees for covered incidents | Any pet, as a plan supplement |
Prescription drug coverage | Reimbursement for prescriptions your vet orders to treat or manage a covered condition | Any pet, as a plan supplement |
What Embrace Pet Insurance Covers
Embrace’s pet insurance policies cover a wide range of accidents and illnesses — but like most pet insurers, it doesn’t cover everything. Here are a few exceptions you should know about before signing up.
Pre-existing conditions
Embrace defines a pre-existing condition as any illness, injury, or irregular symptom that shows up before your policy starts or during the waiting period. That includes symptoms you didn’t take your pet to the vet for.[4]
Generally, Embrace won’t cover pre-existing conditions like diabetes, allergies, or cancer.
But the insurer may make an exception for curable pre-existing conditions, like a urinary tract infection or a mild respiratory bug. If your pet goes 12 months without symptoms or treatment, Embrace may cover that condition if it recurs.
Preventive and routine care
Embrace’s standard accident and illness policy doesn’t cover routine care like vaccines, dental cleanings, or flea and tick meds. But if you want help covering those day-to-day costs, you can add Wellness Rewards, which reimburses you up to an annual limit for eligible services.
You can choose your benefit amount: $300, $500, or $700 per year. Your full benefit amount is available to you right away,[3] but you’ll lose it if you don’t use it all in a year.
Waiting periods for orthopedic conditions in dogs
If you’re insuring a dog, keep in mind that orthopedic issues come with a six-month waiting period in most states. But you can cut that down to 14 days by having your vet complete an orthopedic exam and waiver form.[1]
The orthopedic waiting period for cats is 14 days.
Embrace coverage eligibility and waiting periods
Like most pet insurance companies, Embrace has waiting periods — a span of time after you enroll in which your insurance won’t provide coverage.
The table below outlines a few common health issues and Embrace’s waiting period for each. Keep in mind that if a condition is pre-existing, Embrace won’t cover it even after the waiting period ends.
Accident or Illness | Covered by Embrace? | Waiting Period |
---|---|---|
Broken bone | Yes, as an accident | 2 days |
Swallowed object | Yes, as an accident | 2 days |
Cancer | Yes, as an illness | 14 days |
Urinary tract infection | Yes, as an illness | 14 days |
Hip dysplasia | Yes, as an orthopedic condition | 6 months for dogs, 14 days for cats |
Dental illness (e.g., gingivitis) | Yes, up to $1,000/year | 14 days |
Preventative care (vaccines, etc.) | No (unless you add Wellness Rewards) | None |
How Embrace Pet Insurance Works
Embrace Pet Insurance uses a reimbursement model, which means you pay your vet directly at the time of care, then file a claim to get money back.
After your visit, just submit your itemized bill through Embrace’s website or mobile app. The insurer will then reimburse a portion of the covered costs based on your plan’s deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit.
How an Embrace pet insurance claim works
Let’s say your dog swallows a toy and needs emergency surgery. The vet bill comes to $2,000. Here’s how your Embrace policy might handle that, assuming you have a $500 deductible, 90% reimbursement rate, and $10,000 annual coverage limit:
You pay the $2,000 bill up front.
You submit the claim and documents to Embrace.
Embrace subtracts your $500 deductible (if not already met), leaving $1,500.
You’re reimbursed for 90% of the $1,500. That’s $1,350 back in your pocket.
Your out-of-pocket cost is $650 ($500 deductible + 10% co-insurance on the remainder).
You only need to meet your deductible once per year, not per claim. And if your total reimbursements reach your annual limit, you’re responsible for any additional costs until your policy renews.
Reimbursement rates
When you sign up, you can pick how much you want Embrace to reimburse: 70%, 80%, or 90%. This is the percentage of your covered costs that Embrace will repay after you meet your deductible. A higher reimbursement means you’ll get more money back, but your premium may be higher, too.
Deductibles
A deductible is the share of the vet bill you need to pay before your insurer will cover the rest. With Embrace, you can choose a deductible between $100 and $1,000, and you only need to meet it once per year. A higher deductible usually means lower monthly premiums, but more out of your pocket when you file claims. On the other hand, a lower deductible reduces how much you have to pay before coverage kicks in, but it means you’ll have a higher monthly premium.
Annual limits
Your annual limit is the maximum Embrace will reimburse in a single policy year. If you reach it, you’ll cover the rest of the costs out of pocket until your plan renews.
Embrace lets you set your annual limit based on how much coverage you want. Options typically include $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, or unlimited:

Embrace Pet Insurance FAQs
If Embrace is on your list of pet insurance companies to compare, here’s some additional information about the company to get you started:

Does Embrace pet insurance have waiting periods?
Yes, Embrace has waiting periods that are comparable to those of other pet insurance companies:
Illnesses: 14-day waiting period
Accidents: Starts on your policy’s effective date
Orthopedic issues: Depending on your state, the waiting period for dogs may be 30 days. For cats, it’s 14 days.
Do you have to visit a vet before you enroll in an Embrace policy?

How long does Embrace take to reimburse a claim?
It depends. Embrace processes most accident and illness claims in 10–15 business days, though some are faster. Wellness Rewards claims usually process in five business days or fewer.
