Rate hikes yet again. Leaving USAA after 28 years.

They have significantly increased rates over the last few years. I have excellent credit, a clean driving record, and no claims, yet rates increased again this renewal by another $160 per 6 months. My rate has increased over $400 in the last 18 months to now $1562.68 for 6 months.

Our experience with USAA was horrendous. We lost our home to Hurricane Beryl. Having been a member for 27 years and never making any claims, this experience was indescribable. USAA, to whom we had paid $410.36 for years, had me doing their job. No tickets, no DUI, and a 20-year-old driver. That is too expensive for anyone. After Beryl, there was no power, which meant no electricity, no internet, no open stores, no food, and no gas. By the beginning of the second month, USAA tried to make Texas Wind and Air responsible, then FEMA, for paying for the broken roof, fallen trees, flooded home, and damaged AC. We decided to pack up and move on our own dime again. USAA is and always will be a ripoff. Very expensive to be a USAA member. Never again. We are just fine with AAA. Personally, the old ways of taking care of folks with insurance are only found and available with AAA. USAA has not stopped offering me a job with their claims department since Hurricane Beryl, though. I must know what I am doing better than my agent, who got fired for drinking and falsifying claims documents. There's more to the storyline with USAA. Plan on having to call them constantly to make sure they are at work.

Currently Disgruntled with State Farm Insurance
Reviewed in Oregon on December 2025
Due to State Farm also being our homeowner insurance, and due to them canceling our homeowner insurance and the emotional effect of this cancellation, we are not too happy with State Farm. When pricing other home insurance providers, we learned from these potential providers that we were paying considerably higher for our State Farm car insurance than other insurance companies. Thus, if I were to advise a friend regarding State Farm, I would tell them my experience was that I found much cheaper car insurance with other providers. However, the agent LuAnn Davidson, our State Farm agent, on four different occasions went to bat for us (took our side) when we had issues with State Farm and caused the issue to be resolved in our favor. We were with State Farm for more than 10 years. I would advise my friend if you are going with State Farm, have LuAnn be your agent.

  • Few optional coverages

Ford Focus Insurance Rates by Model Year

Since newer cars are worth more, they’re more expensive to insure. That’s why older Focus models tend to have cheaper car insurance premiums.

For Ford Focus drivers, the biggest price drops are with full coverage. Liability insurance costs tend to remain fairly stable since your rates depend more on your driving behavior than your car’s value.

Let’s look at how monthly Ford Focus insurance costs vary by model year and insurer, according to Compare.com data.

Ford Focus Insurance Rates by Driver Age

Insurance rates change with age, as certain age groups have a higher risk of crashes. Young drivers, especially teens, pay more because they’re at a higher risk of filing a claim than older drivers. But rates drop as you gain experience, and you’ll likely see cheaper rates after you reach age 25.

The table below shows Ford Focus insurance pricing by age groups, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Ford Focus car insurance for teens and drivers younger than 25

Fatal accident rates are highest for drivers younger than 20, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).[2] This helps explain why insurance companies charge more for teen car insurance. But you may be able to lower your premiums by asking your insurer about discounts for good grades or switching companies.

The following chart shows the best car insurance companies for teen Focus drivers, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Rates for Young Drivers

Cheapest Ford Focus car insurance for seniors

Seniors have some of the lowest car insurance costs. That’s due in part because older drivers limit their driving and have fewer crashes, according to the IIHS.[3] But don’t assume all companies will offer lower rates. Insurance rates can vary widely, so using a car insurance comparison site to compare prices can save you even more.

Below are average monthly premiums senior Focus drivers can expect to pay, according to Compare.com data.

Ford Focus Insurance Rates by Driving Record

Your behavior behind the wheel matters. A clean driving record free of accidents, speeding tickets, and driving under the influence (DUI) convictions puts you in a lower risk category, which can save you hundreds of dollars every year.[4]

The table below shows how specific driving violations affect your monthly premiums, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Ford Focus insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

Getting a speeding ticket can cause your Focust insurance rates to jump sharply. Speed was a factor in 28% of fatal accidents in 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).[5]  Even one violation can mark you as a higher-risk driver because speeding increases your risk of getting into an accident and filing a claim.

Because price jumps vary by insurer, shopping around before purchasing your policy can help you save. Ford Focus drivers with a speeding ticket can find the cheapest average rates with the insurers below, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Ford Focus insurance for drivers with an accident

Insurers see accidents as a red flag. An accident on your record is proof that you’ve already cost an insurance company money, which can lead to higher premiums for about three years.[6] But the price bump isn’t uniform across companies, so comparing rates is essential to lowering your rates.

For Focus drivers with an at-fault accident, the companies in the chart below offer the best car insurance rates, according to our data.

Cheapest Rates With an Accident

Cheapest Ford Focus insurance for drivers with a DUI

About 30% of all traffic deaths involve an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the NHTSA.[7] For this reason, a DUI affects your car insurance rate more than any other violation. Rebuilding your record with safe driving habits and telematics programs can help lower costs.

The good news is that some companies specialize in insuring high-risk drivers and offer better rates. Take a look at the chart below to see average monthly costs for Focus drivers with a DUI on their record, based on data from Compare.com.

How to Get Cheaper Car Insurance for Your Ford Focus

Close-up of white car's rear showing chrome "Focus" badge and red "Limited Edition" emblem near tail light.

While the Ford Focus is generally cheaper to insure than most vehicles, here are five additional tips that can help lower your rates even further.

  • Be picky about trim. The Ford Focus RS is a high-performance model that can increase premiums. Base-trim models such as the S and SE are often cheaper to insure.

  • Sign up for telematics. If you’re a safe driver, telematics programs like Allstate Drivewise can lower your rates.

  • Report actual mileage. The Focus’s fuel economy might tempt you to drive more often, but reducing your annual mileage can open up low-mileage discounts.

  • Double-check safety discounts. Ask about airbag discounts and even anti-theft discounts, and make sure your insurer adds them to your insurance policy.

  • Compare quotes. Don’t settle for the first quote you get. Shop around and compare quotes to get the best deal.
