BMW 3 Series Safety Info
The BMW 3 Series is not just sporty; it’s safe. The 3 Series sedan was named a 2018 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Not only does the 3 Series include standard safety features such as anti-lock brakes and airbags, but it also includes an impact sensor that in a crash, disconnects the alternator, fuel pump and starter from the battery, then turns on hazard lights and interior lights and unlocks the doors.
BMW says its vehicles surpass all governmental safety laws around the world. Its engineers are currently developing active safety technology that slows the car down before a crash occurs, instead of just reacting to the crash.
BMW has been involved with racing since the 1930s, beginning with European motorcycle races like the 1939 Isle of Man TT. Today, purpose-built BMW cars participate in Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) racing – which some call “NASCAR with a German accent” – as well as the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). You can spot the 3 Series racing in various touring car series.
BMW Environmental Impact
Want a greener 3 Series with all of BMW’s legendary performance? In 2012, BMW introduced a hybrid version of the 3 Series sedan with an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway. BMW calls its hybrid 3 Series “a hybrid that looks, drives and acts like a sports car.” However, Car and Driver magazine, while calling it ” an extremely well-balanced sports sedan,” criticized the hybrid 3 Series’ performance.
“We kept wondering who on earth wants a 335i that drives a bit like a Prius,” the test-drive review says. The starting price for the 2018 model of the 3 Series Hybrid is just over $45,000.
