The average Oklahoma City driver pays $106 per month for state-minimum liability insurance coverage and $188 per month for a full-coverage policy, according to Compare.com data. Several insurers — including State Farm, USAA, and Allstate — have substantially cheaper average rates, but that’s not always the best gauge of what you’ll pay.

For example: You might pay more if you add options like medical payment coverage, but you could also pay less if you qualify for discounts for keeping your driving record clean or having a teen who gets good grades in school.

In the sections below, we’ll explain how and where you can find the lowest rates for car insurance in Oklahoma City, how much coverage you need, and a few of the best companies in OKC.

Key Takeaways
  • State Farm is the cheapest insurance company in the city, with an average rate of $50 per month.

  • Oklahoma requires drivers to have 25/50/25 car insurance minimums.

  • The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) recommends purchasing more than the state-minimum liability coverage if you can afford it.

I'm dissatisfied with their rate structure. I have a perfect driving record and a non-existent claims history, yet I still pay around $3,000 per year for auto and home insurance. I understand there are others who pay more, yet I am led to believe that most of the annual premiums go to agents.

Our experience with USAA was horrendous. We lost our home to Hurricane Beryl. Having been a member for 27 years and never making any claims, this experience was indescribable. USAA, to whom we had paid $410.36 for years, had me doing their job. No tickets, no DUI, and a 20-year-old driver. That is too expensive for anyone. After Beryl, there was no power, which meant no electricity, no internet, no open stores, no food, and no gas. By the beginning of the second month, USAA tried to make Texas Wind and Air responsible, then FEMA, for paying for the broken roof, fallen trees, flooded home, and damaged AC. We decided to pack up and move on our own dime again. USAA is and always will be a ripoff. Very expensive to be a USAA member. Never again. We are just fine with AAA. Personally, the old ways of taking care of folks with insurance are only found and available with AAA. USAA has not stopped offering me a job with their claims department since Hurricane Beryl, though. I must know what I am doing better than my agent, who got fired for drinking and falsifying claims documents. There's more to the storyline with USAA. Plan on having to call them constantly to make sure they are at work.

USAA requires membership to enroll, and the bad news is that only military members and select family members qualify. The good news for enlisted people is that USAA understands your unique needs. For example, USAA may give you a discount of up to 60% when you leave your car in storage while on deployment. You can also get a discount if you garage your car on base.

Cheapest Liability Insurance Companies

The cheapest car insurance policy you can buy is basic liability coverage that meets the Sooner State’s minimum requirements. Remember that liability coverage only pays for the damages and injuries you cause to another person or vehicle — you’ll pay an additional cost for optional coverages, such as uninsured motorists coverage or personal injury protection (PIP).

Here are some of the best car insurance rates for liability coverage in Oklahoma City, according to Compare.com data.

Average Liability Rates by Company in Oklahoma City

Many insurance experts — including the OID — recommend purchasing a policy with higher limits and additional coverages. With that in mind, let’s look at how much rates increase when you purchase a “full-coverage” policy.

Cheapest Full-Coverage Insurance Companies

Full-coverage car insurance is optional for Oklahoma City residents, but you should still consider it, especially if you own a high-value car or one you can’t afford to replace. While insurance companies don’t use the term “full coverage,” most people use it as a catchall for policies that include liability insurance, comprehensive coverage, and collision insurance.

Comprehensive coverage and collision coverage pay for damages to your car if you cause an accident. You might want a full-coverage policy if you rely on your car or want coverage if an event like a tornado or wildfire damages your car. Additionally, lenders and leasing companies require full-coverage insurance if you finance or lease your car.

The chart below lists the companies with the lowest average monthly premiums for full-coverage insurance in Oklahoma City, according to Compare.com data.

Keep in mind that several other factors beyond your coverage levels affect your monthly rates. Let’s take a closer look at one of the most important: your age.

Compare Oklahoma City Auto Insurance Rates by Age

Age is an uncontrollable rating factor for car insurance, but, thankfully, getting older has its perks. Premium rates are highest for young drivers, but middle-aged drivers receive substantial rate decreases around age 35, which drop again as you enter retirement years.

The table below shows how car insurance rates vary between age groups in Oklahoma City. It also highlights the cheapest insurer in the city for each age group.

  • Teenage drivers are the most expensive age group to insure. Most insurance companies charge more for an auto insurance policy if you have a child younger than the age of 25 driving your vehicle. Alcohol is a factor in many teen crashes, but even sober teen drivers have a crash rate four times higher than adults older than the age of 20, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Oklahoma City teens pay an average monthly rate of $288, according to our research. But you can find more affordable rates with State Farm. It offers teens the lowest average rates in Oklahoma City, at $100 per month.

  • Senior drivers receive some of the lowest rates available for car insurance, regardless of whether they’re retired or still working. Many older drivers spend less time on the road, and a recent IIHS study shows that crash rates for seniors are falling. All of these factors lead to lower rates.

Seniors in Oklahoma City pay $124 per month, on average, according to our data. State Farm offers drivers in their 60s the lowest average rates, at $39 per month.

Compare Oklahoma City Auto Insurance Rates by Driving Record

Safe drivers save money on car insurance, plain and simple. Insurance companies look at your driving record and set your rates partially based on how many driving infractions you have on your record. Infractions like driving over the speed limit, causing a car accident, and driving under the influence (DUI) almost always lead to a rate increase.

The chart below shows how rates change based on your driving record, as well as which companies offer the cheapest average rates to OKC drivers with various infractions, according to our data.

  • A speeding ticket or other traffic violation seems like a simple mistake, but it can cost you. The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office’s website reminds drivers that running late is no excuse to break the law. Fast driving increases the chances of a car accident, which is why a single speeding ticket raises the average car insurance rate by 27%, according to our data.

Oklahoma City drivers with a recent ticket pay around $186 per month on average, according to our data. State Farm offers the most affordable average monthly premiums for drivers with speeding tickets in Oklahoma City, at just $63.

  • When you cause a car accident, your insurance company pays for the damages — and it’ll raise your rates to reimburse itself the next time you renew your policy. Getting into a single at-fault accident increases the average rate by 34%, according to our data.

The average Oklahoma City driver pays $199 per month after an accident, according to our data. State Farm has the lowest average monthly rate for drivers who cause an accident in Oklahoma City, at $66.

  • If you drink and drive in Oklahoma, a judge will take your license away and require you to install an ignition interlock device on your vehicle. And your auto insurance premiums will jump along with the fees and fines that come with a DUI. Rates for DUI-convicted drivers go up by an average of 50%, according to our data.

We found that drivers with a DUI conviction pay around $237 per month for auto insurance in Oklahoma City. But State Farm charges the lowest average rates in the city for these drivers, at $77 per month.

Oklahoma Auto Insurance Requirements

An Oklahoma Route 66 road sign

You need car insurance to drive in Oklahoma City, even if you don’t have a car. All Oklahoma residents with an active driver’s license must meet Oklahoma’s minimum requirements, which are 25/50/25:

You must maintain these liability insurance limits in Oklahoma, but they might not cover the full cost of a car accident. That’s why the Oklahoma Insurance Department recommends you increase these amounts to 100/300/100.

Higher limits cost more, but the cheapest insurance policy isn’t always the best policy for your coverage needs. The good news is that you can often get higher limits for a similar cost to a state-minimum policy — if you know where to look. The best way to find affordable coverage is to compare quotes from as many companies as possible.

How to Get Cheaper Car Insurance in Oklahoma City

You can get cheap car insurance in Oklahoma City if you know where to look. For instance, all drivers, regardless of insurance company, are eligible for a three-year discount if they successfully complete an accident prevention course.

Consider these other ways to save from the Oklahoma Insurance Department:

  • Choose a higher deductible: Consider increasing your deductible amount (if you can afford the extra costs if you file a claim).

  • Maintain a clean driving record: Practice safe driving and avoid accidents and tickets to get the best rates.

  • Ask about discounts: Many insurers offer discounts for installing certain safety features in your car or going paperless.

  • Shop around: Compare quotes from several companies before signing up for a policy to know you’re getting the coverage you need for the best price.
