Key Takeaways
  • Prius insurance averages $144 per month, which is about 12% lower than the national average for car insurance.

  • USAA is the cheapest insurer for Prius owners, with an average monthly premium of $75.

  • Strong safety ratings and low theft rates help keep Prius insurance costs below average compared to other vehicles.

Average Car Insurance Cost for the Toyota Prius

How much you pay for Toyota Prius car insurance depends heavily on the type of policy you choose. Liability-only insurance covers property damage and injuries you cause to others. Full coverage isn’t the cheapest option, but it adds comprehensive and collision protection for your vehicle.

Comprehensive insurance takes care of non-collision incidents, like theft, vandalism, or weather damage, and collision helps pay for damage to your Prius after an accident.

The table below compares liability and full-coverage policy rates for the Prius to the national average for all vehicles, according to Compare.com data.

Rate hikes yet again. Leaving USAA after 28 years.
Reviewed in Arizona on July 2025
They have significantly increased rates over the last few years. I have excellent credit, a clean driving record, and no claims, yet rates increased again this renewal by another $160 per 6 months. My rate has increased over $400 in the last 18 months to now $1562.68 for 6 months.

Our experience with USAA was horrendous. We lost our home to Hurricane Beryl. Having been a member for 27 years and never making any claims, this experience was indescribable. USAA, to whom we had paid $410.36 for years, had me doing their job. No tickets, no DUI, and a 20-year-old driver. That is too expensive for anyone. After Beryl, there was no power, which meant no electricity, no internet, no open stores, no food, and no gas. By the beginning of the second month, USAA tried to make Texas Wind and Air responsible, then FEMA, for paying for the broken roof, fallen trees, flooded home, and damaged AC. We decided to pack up and move on our own dime again. USAA is and always will be a ripoff. Very expensive to be a USAA member. Never again. We are just fine with AAA. Personally, the old ways of taking care of folks with insurance are only found and available with AAA. USAA has not stopped offering me a job with their claims department since Hurricane Beryl, though. I must know what I am doing better than my agent, who got fired for drinking and falsifying claims documents. There's more to the storyline with USAA. Plan on having to call them constantly to make sure they are at work.

Currently Disgruntled with State Farm Insurance
Reviewed in Oregon on December 2025
Due to State Farm also being our homeowner insurance, and due to them canceling our homeowner insurance and the emotional effect of this cancellation, we are not too happy with State Farm. When pricing other home insurance providers, we learned from these potential providers that we were paying considerably higher for our State Farm car insurance than other insurance companies. Thus, if I were to advise a friend regarding State Farm, I would tell them my experience was that I found much cheaper car insurance with other providers. However, the agent LuAnn Davidson, our State Farm agent, on four different occasions went to bat for us (took our side) when we had issues with State Farm and caused the issue to be resolved in our favor. We were with State Farm for more than 10 years. I would advise my friend if you are going with State Farm, have LuAnn be your agent.

Toyota Prius Insurance Rates by Driver Age

How long you’ve been driving also affects your Prius insurance costs. Teens face higher crash risks than older drivers. In fact, drivers ages 16–19 have nearly triple the fatal crash rate of drivers 20 and older per mile driven, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).[5]

Auto insurance companies charge younger drivers more because of that risk. But fortunately for teens, premiums begin to decrease around age 25.

Let’s look at how Toyota Prius owners experience these rate changes in the table below, according to our research.

Cheapest Prius car insurance for teens and drivers under 25

Teens’ inexperience behind the wheel can make them less able to respond quickly and appropriately to dangerous situations, increasing their likelihood of an accident.

And the younger the teen, the greater their risks. The per-mile crash rate for 16-year-old drivers is approximately 1.5 times as high as that of 18- and 19-year-old drivers, according to the CDC.

Here’s a look at what some top companies charge young drivers for Prius insurance, based on our data.

Cheapest Rates for Young Drivers

Cheapest Prius car insurance for seniors

Older drivers tend to drive fewer miles and avoid challenging situations, such as night driving. That translates to fewer crashes and property damage claims, something insurance companies reward with reduced premiums.[6] But savvy seniors can save even more with the right insurer.

With that in mind, we’ve highlighted the cheapest insurers for senior Prius owners in the chart below.

Toyota Prius Insurance Rates by Driving Record

How you’ve driven in the past is a good indicator of how you’ll drive in the future, which directly translates to how likely you are to file a claim.

Drivers with tickets or accidents tend to file more claims, so insurers charge higher premiums to offset this risk.[7] Some might even refuse to cover you altogether if you have serious infractions like a DUI.

Certain companies actually specialize in high-risk coverage, offering policies to drivers others won’t insure. But these policies typically come with higher rates.

The table below highlights the average monthly premiums for Prius owners with different driving records, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Toyota Prius insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

Speeding increases the chance you’ll lose control of your Prius, reduces the time you have to react to danger, and raises your risk of a serious crash.[8] That’s why speeding tickets often lead to higher insurance rates — they signal to insurers that you’re a riskier driver.

Here are the cheapest car insurance companies for Prius drivers with speeding tickets, according to our research.

Cheapest Rates With a Ticket

Your driving record helps insurers predict future claims, and an at-fault accident signals increased risk. Insurance companies view drivers with a history of accidents as more likely to get into another one, so insurers raise premiums to account for that heightened risk. And if your accident is the result of driving under the influence, most insurers won’t renew your policy.

Choosing the right company can limit these costly rate hikes. The chart below lists the cheapest companies for Toyota Prius drivers with a recent accident, according to Compare.com data.

A DUI shows insurers that you’re a high-risk driver — even more so than a ticket or at-fault accident. In fact, our data shows that average rates nearly double after a single DUI conviction.

Many states also require you to file an SR-22 or FR-44 form after a conviction to prove you have proper coverage. Not all insurers offer SR-22 insurance, and they typically charge you higher premiums.

Still, some insurance companies offer relatively reasonable rates to drivers with a DUI, and a few even specialize in high-risk drivers. Check out the chart below to see the cheapest insurers for drivers with a DUI, according to our data.

Deep Dive: What Affects Toyota Prius Car Insurance Rates?

The specific characteristics of your Toyota Prius can play a role in your overall insurance costs. Here’s what can push your premiums up or down:

  • Affordable pricing: A 2025 Prius starts around $29,485, putting it in the mid-range for compact cars. This helps keep insurance costs reasonable compared to luxury vehicles.

  • Theft rates: The Prius doesn’t appear on the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s 2024 list of the top five most stolen vehicles.[9] Lower theft rates typically mean lower insurance premiums.

  • Safety features: 2023 and newer Prius models earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, which can lower your risk of injuries and filing claims.[10]

Besides shopping around to compare car insurance quotes, a few additional strategies can help you get cheaper premiums.

  • Ask about hybrid electric vehicle discounts. Many insurers, like Travelers, offer discounts specifically for eco-friendly cars.

  • Mention advanced safety features. Be sure your insurer knows about your Prius’ Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system, IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, and other safety features, which may qualify you for more discounts.

  • Try usage-based insurance. Sign up for a usage-based or telematics program that offers lower rates for good driving habits.

  • Go paperless for extra savings. Ask about discounts for paperless policies, which is an eco-friendly alternative.
