Where are America’s Most Reckless Drivers?
Driving recklessly is not only irresponsible, it’s extremely dangerous. So dangerous in fact that it’s responsible for the inequitable loss of life. Motor vehicle crashes across the nation resulted in 32,675 deaths in 2014, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While weather conditions, road hazards and other unforeseen factors contribute to motor vehicle accidents, research shows that not every state is filled with speeding, heedless drivers. Large cities bogged down with traffic are much more likely to see accidents than smaller, less populated towns.
According to statistics, the safest drivers tend to come from quieter little towns such as Huntsville and Montgomery, Ala., and Brownsville and Laredo, Texas, according to Forbes. Achieving the highest rank for safest drivers in the country is Ft. Collins, Colo. Drivers in this city go an average of 14.2 years in between motor vehicle crashes, compared to the national average of once every 10 years. On the contrary, think twice before driving through Worcester, Mass. Forbes reported that drivers in this East Coast city are 134.8 percent more likely to get themselves in a motor vehicle accident than the average U.S. citizen. Just one hour east and not far behind them statistically are Boston drivers, who are 129 percent more likely to get in an accident than their counterparts.
In addition to the horrendous number of fatalities each year, reckless driving was also the cause of 2.31 million injuries in 2013, according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association. The good news is that the number of injuries has been on the decline in recent years, but the costs are still high. On average, bodily injuries resulted in an auto liability claim of $15, 443. The national average of accident costs overall is just under $900. With stricter driving regulations and more conscientious drivers, these nationwide statistics can drastically be reduced.
