Average Car Insurance Cost for BMW i8

How you set up your car insurance policy influences the cost of your premiums. State-minimum coverage or liability-only policies only cover damages you cause to others up to coverage limits. This includes bodily injury liability and property damage liability.

Full coverage includes liability insurance but adds protections for your vehicle with collision coverage for accident-related damages and comprehensive coverage for non-collision damages.[1]

Rate hikes yet again. Leaving USAA after 28 years.

They have significantly increased rates over the last few years. I have excellent credit, a clean driving record, and no claims, yet rates increased again this renewal by another $160 per 6 months. My rate has increased over $400 in the last 18 months to now $1562.68 for 6 months.

Our experience with USAA was horrendous. We lost our home to Hurricane Beryl. Having been a member for 27 years and never making any claims, this experience was indescribable. USAA, to whom we had paid $410.36 for years, had me doing their job. No tickets, no DUI, and a 20-year-old driver. That is too expensive for anyone. After Beryl, there was no power, which meant no electricity, no internet, no open stores, no food, and no gas. By the beginning of the second month, USAA tried to make Texas Wind and Air responsible, then FEMA, for paying for the broken roof, fallen trees, flooded home, and damaged AC. We decided to pack up and move on our own dime again. USAA is and always will be a ripoff. Very expensive to be a USAA member. Never again. We are just fine with AAA. Personally, the old ways of taking care of folks with insurance are only found and available with AAA. USAA has not stopped offering me a job with their claims department since Hurricane Beryl, though. I must know what I am doing better than my agent, who got fired for drinking and falsifying claims documents. There's more to the storyline with USAA. Plan on having to call them constantly to make sure they are at work.

BMW i8 Insurance Rates by Driver Age

Driver age has a big effect on car insurance costs. Teens and young drivers pay the most because their risk for at-fault accidents is higher than all other age groups.[5] Rates drop as we age, typically reaching lifetime lows in our senior years.

Here’s how this pattern applies to BMW i8 insurance premiums, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest BMW i8 car insurance for teens and drivers younger than 25

Teen drivers pay high rates primarily because of their inexperience on the road, lower rates of seat belt use, and higher rates of distracted driving.[5] They also speed more than other groups, which can increase the risk of car accidents.[6] Even so, younger drivers can still find a good deal by working with an affordable insurer.

Here are the cheapest car insurance companies for BMW i8 teens and young drivers, based on data from Compare.com.

Cheapest Rates for Young Drivers

Cheapest BMW i8 car insurance for seniors

Insurance companies typically offer lower rates to senior drivers because they have more experience on the road, drive less, and account for fewer car accidents than other age groups.[7] [8] Still, some insurers lower rates even for seniors.

The table below shows the cheapest options for senior BMW i8 drivers, according to our data.

BMW i8 Insurance Rates by Driving Record

Your driving record affects insurance rates because insurers use your history to predict future driving behavior. Drivers with clean records get lower rates (and good driver discounts), while drivers with tickets pay more.[4]

The table below highlights pricing for BMW i8 drivers with varying driving histories, based on Compare.com data.

BMW i8 drivers with a clean record get the lowest rates, which rise sharply for serious offenses, such as driving under the influence (DUI). Below, we take a closer look at how each violation affects premiums.

Cheapest BMW i8 insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

Speeding tickets raise car insurance rates because speeding greatly increases the risk of a car accident. In fact, speeding accounted for 12,000, or 29%, of all car accident fatalities in 2023.[6] But some insurers offer lower rates to this group than others.

Here are the cheapest insurers for i8 drivers with a speeding ticket, according to our data.

Cheapest Rates With a Ticket

Cheapest BMW i8 insurance for drivers with an accident

If you have an at-fault accident on your record, your insurer will typically increase your premium to adjust for the level of risk you pose, according to the Insurance Information Institute.[9] Though insurers always charge more for higher-risk drivers, some insurance companies still offer a good deal.

This table shows the most affordable insurers for i8 drivers with an at-fault accident, based on data from Compare.com.

Cheapest Rates With an Accident

Cheapest BMW i8 insurance for drivers with a DUI

Drivers with a DUI tend to receive some of the highest car insurance rates because alcohol-related car accidents account for about one-third of all traffic fatalities.[10] Insurers may also view you as more likely to have another DUI if you’ve already had one. That said, some insurance companies can offer lower-than-average premiums to this group.

The table below lists the cheapest insurers for i8 drivers with a DUI, according to data from the Compare.com team.

Deep Dive: What Affects BMW i8 Car Insurance Rates?

Your vehicle’s specs and features affect rates. Here are the most significant BMW i8 features likely influencing your costs.

  • Value: The average resale price of the 2020 BMW i8 is around $75,000.[11] Compared to the average new vehicle price of about $50,000, the i8 retains a higher value, which can cause higher insurance rates.[12]

  • Horsepower: The i8 has a powerful engine, which increases the risk of speeding and can raise car insurance costs.

  • Safety features: With a collision warning system, surround-view camera, and pedestrian detection system, the i8’s safety features may help you earn vehicle safety discounts.

  • Classification: Insurers view sports cars as a higher risk and charge more expensive premiums for this vehicle class.[13]

  • Trim level: The i8 coupe costs less than the roadster, which translates into lower and higher rates, respectively.

How to Get Cheaper Car Insurance for Your BMW i8

Below, we’ve listed the best ways for BMW i8 drivers to earn lower car insurance rates.

  • Enroll in a telematics program. You can save dramatically by signing up for a telematics program and practicing safe driving habits.

  • Bundle policies. Earn a valuable multi-policy discount for bundling home insurance with your auto policy.

  • Increase deductibles. The higher your car insurance deductibles, the lower the corresponding premiums.

  • Garage your car. Storing your vehicle in a locked garage reduces the chance of theft, weather damage, and vandalism, lowering comprehensive insurance premiums.

  • Compare policies. Gathering and comparing car insurance quotes regularly ensures you never miss a chance to save.
