  • USAA offers the cheapest rate for the Leaf, at $89 per month.

  • The Leaf’s expensive EV battery and repair costs raise rates, but its 5-star National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety rating and standard driver-assist features may help you qualify for certain vehicle safety discounts.[1]

Rate hikes yet again. Leaving USAA after 28 years.
Reviewed in Arizona on July 2025
They have significantly increased rates over the last few years. I have excellent credit, a clean driving record, and no claims, yet rates increased again this renewal by another $160 per 6 months. My rate has increased over $400 in the last 18 months to now $1562.68 for 6 months.

Our experience with USAA was horrendous. We lost our home to Hurricane Beryl. Having been a member for 27 years and never making any claims, this experience was indescribable. USAA, to whom we had paid $410.36 for years, had me doing their job. No tickets, no DUI, and a 20-year-old driver. That is too expensive for anyone. After Beryl, there was no power, which meant no electricity, no internet, no open stores, no food, and no gas. By the beginning of the second month, USAA tried to make Texas Wind and Air responsible, then FEMA, for paying for the broken roof, fallen trees, flooded home, and damaged AC. We decided to pack up and move on our own dime again. USAA is and always will be a ripoff. Very expensive to be a USAA member. Never again. We are just fine with AAA. Personally, the old ways of taking care of folks with insurance are only found and available with AAA. USAA has not stopped offering me a job with their claims department since Hurricane Beryl, though. I must know what I am doing better than my agent, who got fired for drinking and falsifying claims documents. There's more to the storyline with USAA. Plan on having to call them constantly to make sure they are at work.

Why we picked this company

USAA consistently offers some of the lowest rates for Nissan Leaf drivers. But the company limits eligibility to current and former military members and their immediate families. Safe drivers can save even more through SafePilot, USAA’s telematics program. Low-mileage drivers may also benefit from SafePilot Miles, the company’s pay-per-mile option.

Pros
  • Cheap Nissan Leaf rates

  • 24/7 roadside assistance

  • Military on-base discount available

Cons
  • No EV-specific discounts

  • Doesn’t guarantee EV rental cars

  • Membership limited to military families

Why we picked this company

Though State Farm doesn’t offer electric vehicle discounts, you still have access to all its other discounts and coverages, including rideshare insurance. If your Leaf runs out of charge, State Farm’s roadside assistance will either tow you to the closest charging station or send a service provider with a portable charger to get you back on the road.

Pros
  • Affordable EV rates

  • Multiple safe driver discounts

  • Highly rated usage-based insurance[2]

Cons
  • Doesn’t offer EV-specific discounts

  • Low Trustpilot reviews[3]

  • Higher rates for certain driver profiles

Why we picked this company

Allstate offers the same coverage and discounts for the Nissan Leaf as it does for other gas-powered vehicles, but it stands out for its EV-focused support. Allstate provides charger protection plans that cover mechanical failures or accidental damage. It also offers discounts on home chargers and installation — a valuable perk for Leaf owners.

Pros
  • EV charger coverage available

  • Customizable full-coverage policies

  • Accident forgiveness available

Cons
  • Rates may be higher than others

  • No EV car insurance discounts

  • Below-average claims satisfaction rating[4]

Nissan Leaf Insurance Rates by Model Year

The electric Nissan Leaf is an affordable compact car, and its insurance costs reflect that. Because the Leaf’s starting price is relatively low ($29,990 MSRP for the 2026 model year), insurers may have to pay less to replace it if you file a total loss claim.[5]

Generally, the lower a vehicle’s value, the less it costs to insure. That’s why older Leaf models usually have lower premiums. The table below shows the average cost for Leaf insurance by model year, according to our data.

Every day, your Leaf is exposed to a range of risks specific to your state. Traffic density, weather events, vandalism and theft rates, and local repair costs in your area all influence what you’ll pay for coverage. Nissan Leaf Insurance Rates by Driver Age

Your age is a strong indicator of your risk of getting into an accident. Younger, less experienced drivers, especially teenagers, tend to have higher crash rates. In fact, teen drivers are nearly three times as likely to be in a fatal crash as drivers 20 and older.[7] That all adds up to some pretty high insurance rates.

The good news is that rates tend to drop as you age and gain more experience. Here’s how Nissan Leaf insurance costs vary by age group, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Nissan Leaf car insurance for teens and drivers younger than 25

The younger and less experienced a driver is, the higher their risk of getting into an accident. For example, 16-year-olds are 1.5 times as likely to crash as 18- and 19-year-old drivers. Statistics like these explain why car insurance is so expensive for teens and other young drivers.

But you can still find a good deal with the right company. Begin your search with the companies offering the lowest Nissan Leaf premiums in the chart below, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Rates for Young Drivers

Cheapest Nissan Leaf car insurance for seniors

The more experience you have behind the wheel, the lower your risk of getting into an accident. In fact, fatal crash rates for drivers in their 70s are lower than for middle-aged drivers.[8] Because older drivers tend to file fewer claims, insurers often reward them with some of the lowest premiums.

Here are the cheapest insurance companies for senior Nissan Leaf drivers, according to Compare.com data.

Nissan Leaf Insurance Rates by Driving Record

Your driving record is one of the most important factors insurers use to set your premium. Tickets, collisions, and driving under the influence (DUI) charges signal a higher risk of future claims, which typically result in higher insurance costs.

Fortunately, some insurers specialize in covering high-risk drivers and may still offer competitive rates, even for those with past violations.

The table below highlights how Nissan Leaf insurance rates can vary by driving record, according to our data.

Cheapest Nissan Leaf insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

Speeding significantly increases the likelihood of a crash by reducing your ability to react safely and making it harder to maintain control. It can also increase the severity of a collision.[9] A speeding ticket signals to insurers that you’re more likely to cause accidents or file claims, which leads to more expensive insurance.

To make your search easier, we identified the cheapest insurance companies for Leaf drivers with a ticket in the chart below.

Cheapest Rates With a Ticket

Cheapest Nissan Leaf insurance for drivers with an accident

At-fault accidents often lead to higher premiums because they show insurers you’re more likely to file future claims. Filing a claim after a crash typically triggers a rate reassessment that can last for up to three years.[10]

But you can often limit these rate hikes if you know where to look. The chart below shows the cheapest insurers for Nissan Leaf drivers after an accident, based on our research.

Cheapest Rates With an Accident

Cheapest Nissan Leaf insurance for drivers with a DUI

A DUI is one of the most serious violations on your insurance record. If you drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08, you’re approximately four times more likely to crash than if you were sober.[11]

That’s why insurers impose steep rate hikes after a DUI conviction. Many states may also require you to have an SR-22 or FR-44 certificate, which proves you maintain minimum coverage and adds another layer of expense.

Still, some companies specialize in insuring high-risk drivers, including drivers with a DUI. You can find a lower rate for your Nissan Leaf from one of the companies in the chart below, according to Compare.com data.

Deep Dive: What Affects Nissan Leaf Car Insurance Rates?

Your Nissan Leaf insurance rate depends on several key factors, such as:

  • Vehicle value: Depending on the trim level, you’ll pay between $31,485 and $40,485 for a 2026 Nissan Leaf.[12] More expensive trims typically cost more to insure.

  • Repair and parts costs: The Leaf’s electric drivetrain and battery pack increase parts costs and usually require specialized repair shops, which can drive up repair expenses and your insurance rate.

  • EV costs: Electric vehicles generally cost around 8% more to insure than gas- and diesel-powered cars, according to Compare.com data.

  • Safety features: The Leaf boasts a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA and comes with standard safety features, such as lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring. Reducing your crash risk with features like these can lower your premium and qualify you for a safety features discount.

  • Consider your mileage. If you’re a low-mileage driver, you might save on Nissan Leaf insurance with a pay-per-mile plan.
