Key Takeaways
  • The average cost to insure a Dodge Durango is $153 per month, which is slightly cheaper than the national average for all cars, at $166.

  • USAA offers the lowest rate, at $76 per month, followed by State Farm, at $90 per month.

  • Higher-horsepower models can increase premiums, but the Durango’s low starting MSRP helps keep insurance rates competitive for an SUV of this size.

Average Car Insurance Cost for the Dodge Durango

The coverage you choose influences the cost of your car insurance. Liability-only insurance (minimum coverage) typically costs the least. But its key components — bodily injury liability and property damage liability — pay for only the damages you cause to others, and only up to your insurance coverage limits.

Full-coverage car insurance protects your vehicle. It includes collision insurance, which pays to repair your car after an at-fault accident, and comprehensive coverage for non-collision events like theft, vandalism, or hail.

Here’s how Dodge Durango rates differ based on policy type and how they compare to national averages, according to Compare.com data.

Failure to Serve Our Vets
Pricing and value for your money are poor. Home insurance has become way too expensive. USAA sends you a notice saying they’re renewing your policy, but they don’t clearly tell you what changes they’ve made. When someone says they are renewing your policy, most people assume the contract is the same and they are agreeing to renew it with you. However, USAA makes changes, and it’s up to you to read the entire contract and find any changes they may have made. I personally went from a $1,000 deductible to a 2% deductible and didn’t know it until I made a claim. Now I’ve learned that every six months you have to read the entire contract to see if USAA has made any changes. I’ve lost faith in this company and will only remain with them until I find another company. I’ve also found that if you file a car claim, your insurance will go up at the next renewal. USAA has come under new management, and since then the pricing and customer service have gone down. I’m looking for a company that’s truly concerned about the welfare of its members and dedicated to the people they should be serving.

Extremely Expensive Insurance
Extremely expensive. When I went down to one car, the new insurance rate was 30% higher. Overall, I think their rates are very high, with almost no contact from my agent. They rely on online communication and don’t do a direct review of your policy. They now charge a fee for sending paper copies of your policies in the mail. Overall, I’m very dissatisfied.

Dodge Durango Insurance Rates by Driver Age

Insurers consider your age when determining insurance premiums because it’s a significant indicator of risk. Teens and younger drivers pay more due to inexperience behind the wheel.[1] Insurance premiums typically decrease as you age, hitting lifetime lows when you reach your 60s.

The table below shows average insurance rates for teens, adults, and seniors, based on Compare.com data. Note how Durango insurance rates decrease dramatically once drivers reach adulthood and drop even lower for seniors.

Cheapest Dodge Durango car insurance for teens and drivers younger than 25

Teen drivers typically have the highest insurance premiums, with drivers younger than 25 not far behind. Drivers in this age group are more likely to get into a car accident, speed, or drive while distracted.[2] Even so, some insurance companies offer more affordable policies than others.

The following insurers offer the cheapest monthly premiums on average for teens and young Durango drivers, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Dodge Durango car insurance for seniors

Because senior drivers have the most experience on the road and drive fewer miles than other age groups, they’re involved in fewer fatal car accidents.[3] They also have the cheapest auto insurance rates. Despite those already low rates, some insurers offer even better deals to this group.

The table below shows the companies with the lowest average monthly rates for senior Durango owners, according to Compare.com data.

Dodge Durango Insurance Rates by Driving Record

Your driving history also plays a significant role in determining your Dodge Durango insurance costs. Insurers look at how you’ve driven in the past to assess your risk of making a claim.

If you have moving violations, like speeding tickets, an at-fault accident, or a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction, insurers view you as a higher risk.[4] Being a good driver with a clean record usually means lower premiums.

The table below shows average monthly premiums by driving record, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Dodge Durango insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

While a speeding ticket may not seem like a big deal, it can raise your insurance rates for years. That’s because speeding accounts for a significant portion of crash-related traffic deaths — around 29% in 2023.[5] Even so, you can still find affordable rates by shopping around and comparing prices.

The following chart lists the cheapest insurers for Durango drivers with a speeding ticket, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Dodge Durango insurance for drivers with an accident

A single at-fault accident increases your risk of a second at-fault accident by as much as 88%. This increased risk translates into higher insurance costs for about three years.[6] But several insurers offer cheaper-than-average rates if you have an at-fault accident on your record.

The chart below highlights the companies with the lowest rates for Durango drivers with an at-fault accident, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Dodge Durango insurance for drivers with a DUI

A DUI conviction results in some of the most significant premium increases because it demonstrates high-risk driving behavior. More than 12,000 people died in alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2023.[7] Alcohol causes a large share of crash-related fatalities, and studies show that people who drink and drive are likely to drive under the influence again.

That said, some insurers offer more affordable coverage to drivers with a DUI. The chart below shows the average monthly premiums for Durango drivers with a DUI, according to Compare.com data.

Deep Dive: What Affects Dodge Durango Car Insurance Rates?

Your vehicle’s details and specifications can also affect your premiums. The factors below contribute to how insurers determine the Durango’s rates:

    illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/295508/150x150/49b83a2f07/compare-icons-96x96014-file.svg

    Vehicle value

With a starting MSRP of just less than $41,000, a new Dodge Durango costs less than the average new vehicle.[8] This lower price can mean lower insurance rates, although more expensive trims — like the SXT Plus, Citadel, and SRT Hellcat — typically come with higher insurance costs.

    illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/295508/150x150/4e19451507/compare-icons-96x96020-speedometer.svg

    Horsepower

The Durango has higher-than-average horsepower, which increases the risk of speeding and may lead to higher insurance premiums.

    illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/295508/150x150/88f2d8e314/compare-icons-green-96x96-007-airbag.svg

    Safety features

The Durango consistently receives a 4-star National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety rating.[9] Along with brake assist and blind-spot monitoring, some Durangos also have forward-collision warning and a lane-departure warning. These features may contribute to lower insurance rates.

    Size

Large vehicles pose a greater threat to pedestrians, but they offer better protection to passengers, which may lead to lower insurance rates.[10]

How to Get Cheaper Car Insurance for Your Dodge Durango

Close up of a Dodge Durango rear headlight

Below are some of the best tried-and-true ways to lower your Dodge Durango car insurance costs.

  • Increase deductibles. Raising your deductibles usually results in lower car insurance costs, but you’ll have to pay the difference out of pocket.

  • Leverage multi-policy discounts. Bundling homeowners, renters, or life insurance with your car insurance policy often earns you one of the best car insurance discounts available.

  • Drop optional coverage. You can lower costs by removing extras such as gap insurance, comprehensive, or collision coverage when your car is older and not worth as much.

  • Drive safely. Maintaining a clean driving record is the best way to keep your insurance premiums low.

  • Get quotes. Comparing policies and car insurance quotes from several insurance companies each time your policy renews ensures you never miss a chance to save.

Dodge Durango Insurance FAQs

  • Is a Dodge Durango expensive to insure?

Liability insurance runs an average of $81 per month, while full coverage will cost you around $154. The cost of car insurance for the Dodge Durango is about on par with the average SUV.

  • How can I get the best price on car insurance for my Dodge Durango?

The only way to make sure you're getting the cheapest price on auto insurance is to regularly shop around and compare quotes from a whole range of companies. A good rule of thumb is to get quotes every 6 months or so. Luckily, sites like Compare.com let you compare premiums from multiple carriers at once, meaning you can find the lowest rates (or guarantee you already have the best deal) in just a few minutes.

  • Does the color of my Dodge Durango affect my insurance rates?

You've probably heard the old adage that it costs more to insure a red car, but that's actually a myth. There are several variables insurance companies look at when they calculate your prices, but the color of your Dodge Durango is not used to make that determination.

  • Do I need to have insurance before I buy a Dodge Durango?

Before you can legally drive your new (or new to you) car off the dealership lot, you'll need to have an insurance policy in place. Some dealerships might offer you a car insurance policy as part of the car-buying process, but it's best to let your auto insurance company know before you buy.

  • What car insurance discounts can I get for my Dodge Durango?

There are all sorts of discounts out there when it comes to car insurance. Many of them (like "pay-in-full discounts" and "multi-vehicle discounts") are based less on your Durango and more on you, but if your Durango has safety features like anti-lock brakes, anti-theft systems, airbags, and other features, it may be eligible for certain discounts. You'll only know about which discounts you qualify for if you talk with your insurance agent and ask about their discounts, since they differ quite a bit from company to company.
