Cheapest Liability Car Insurance in Portland: State Farm

The type of coverage you choose is one of the many factors that affect your premiums. Liability coverage at the state minimum is the cheapest policy you can purchase. It covers only the damage and injuries you cause to others in an accident, but it won’t cover yours.

While opting for the minimum liability coverage can help to keep your premiums low, you might find it’s not enough coverage for your needs. For more protection on the road, consider full-coverage insurance.

In Portland, liability-only insurance costs an average of $130 per month. The table below shows the average monthly rates for liability coverage for the five cheapest companies in Portland, according to Compare.com data.

How much car insurance is required in Portland?

In Oregon, it’s illegal to drive without minimum liability coverage — plus, the state has higher car insurance requirements than other states. You‘re also required to carry the following coverages:

But to ensure that you have the proper coverage, you’ll need to have a policy with at least the following coverages and limits:

Remember, Oregon is an at-fault state. This means the driver who causes the accident has to pay for the damages. Because of this, the state’s minimum insurance requirements might not provide enough coverage if you’re in a serious accident. It’s a good idea to consider increasing your limits for greater protection.

Cheapest Full-Coverage Car Insurance in Portland: Mile Auto

Full-coverage auto insurance typically includes liability insurance and collision and comprehensive coverage.

While liability insurance protects the other drivers if you cause an accident, full-coverage insurance protects you and your vehicle. Full coverage is typically more expensive because it provides more protection, but the extra cost is worth it for many drivers.

Portland drivers pay an average of $202 per month for full-coverage car insurance. The table below lists the cheapest full-coverage insurance rates in Portland, according to Compare.com data.

That’s because older drivers tend to drive less and are more likely to follow speed limits, according to the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I). The Cheapest Car Insurance for Drivers by Driving Record

Your driving record also has a significant effect on your auto insurance rates. In general, the cleaner your record, the lower your premium. But if you’ve been in a few accidents or have several speeding tickets, you can expect to pay more than someone with a clean driving record.

Every traffic violation affects your rates differently. A ticket or at-fault accident can cause a modest increase. But driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII) conviction will cause your insurance costs to spike.

The table below shows average monthly premiums for different driving records and the cheapest insurer for each, according to Compare.com data.

Cheapest Car Insurance for Drivers by Credit

Oregon allows insurers to check your credit history when determining your rates. Drivers with poor credit tend to file more claims, so insurers charge them higher premiums. On the other hand, maintaining good credit can help lower your rates.

Portland drivers with poor credit pay an average of $208 per month for car insurance. But drivers with excellent credit pay only $145 per month.

That said, not every insurer uses your credit history. And some even offer affordable rates, regardless of your credit.

How to Get the Cheapest Car Insurance in Portland

Though Portland car insurance rates are relatively expensive, area drivers have access to several ways to cut costs. Consider the following tips:

  • Ask about discounts. Insurers offer a variety of discounts that can help increase your savings. Common discounts include defensive driving, low mileage, safety equipment, anti-theft devices, and military discounts.

  • Bundle insurance. Many companies will give you a multi-policy discount when you purchase two or more insurance products, such as home and auto coverage.

  • Consider your deductible. Your deductible is the amount of money you have to pay before your insurance takes over. A higher deductible can lower your monthly premiums but increases your out-of-pocket costs. Make sure you can afford the extra expense before increasing your deductible.

  • Compare insurance companies. Rates between insurance companies vary dramatically, so compare quotes from at least three different insurance companies before deciding which insurer is right for you.

Too late to change to another company
I would shop around depending on how much coverage you need. Nationwide has handled my past claims, although, as you might suspect, there were some frustrating times spent trying to glean information from representatives. Nationwide has changed since I first started with them. They used to have independent agencies; now they seem to be just representative agencies with no real concern for people—just customers who pay their bills every month if they "accept" your business.

Portland Auto Insurance FAQs

If you’re ready to learn more about car insurance in Portland, Oregon, check out answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.

  • What’s the cheapest auto insurance company in Portland?

State Farm offers the cheapest car insurance in Portland, with an average monthly premium of $94, according to our analysis. But that doesn’t guarantee you’ll get the same rate. Be sure to shop around to find the best rates in the city.

  • How much is car insurance in Portland, OR?

Portland drivers pay an average monthly rate of $166, according to our data. That breaks down to $130 per month for liability coverage and $202 for full coverage.

  • What’s the best car insurance company in Portland?

It depends. Travelers, Safeco, and Nationwide are Compare.com’s top picks for car insurance in Portland. But there isn’t a single “best” car insurance company for every type of driver. The right company for you depends on factors like your budget, coverage needs, and driving record.

  • Is car insurance in Portland expensive?

On average, Portland tends to have higher car insurance rates than the state and national averages. Portland drivers pay an average of $166 per month for auto coverage. Compare that to the overall monthly average in Oregon of $123 and the national average of $140 per month.

  • Is minimum coverage enough in Portland?

Minimum-coverage car insurance might meet Oregon’s legal requirements, but most insurance experts recommend buying full coverage. Minimum coverage covers only the other driver’s injuries and damages in an accident, not your own. Plus, serious accidents can easily exceed Oregon’s minimum requirements, leaving you on the hook to pay the rest out of pocket.
