What Is a Car Insurance Teacher Discount?

Car insurance teacher discount: teacher talking to students

Auto insurance companies award teacher discounts to reward K-12 teachers, college professors, and eligible educators in public or private schools and select educational organizations.

As with all discounts, eligibility criteria and program availability for car insurance teacher discounts vary depending on the auto insurance company. For example, Liberty Mutual offers Vandalism Loss Protection for teachers, whereas GEICO does not.

How Do I Qualify for a Car Insurance Teacher Discount?

Each insurance provider may specify what you need and what coverage their discounts apply to. Some may require you to be a member of a specific teacher organization, like the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). All ask for proof of employment (like a school ID) and a good-standing account with zero or few claims, at-fault accidents, and moving violations.

Keep in mind that not all auto insurance companies offer teacher discounts. Companies have their own requirements and rates, so be sure to shop around with a rate comparison tool like Compare.com.

What Are Some Limitations of Car Insurance Teacher Discounts?

One limitation auto insurance companies may set is for teachers to be members of professional associations. For example, GEICO offers discounts to members of select educational organizations, such as the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

Another limitation of car insurance teacher discounts is that they don’t apply to every policy or vehicle make and model. Some policies may not be eligible for an educator discount, and some vehicles might not be covered by discounted plans. Also, auto insurance companies generally won’t offer discounts to drivers unless their accounts are in good standing.

Which Auto Insurers Offer Teacher Discounts?

Some auto insurance companies offer teacher discounts, including one focused solely on teachers and educators.

GEICO

Policy Details: Under GEICO, teachers with memberships to partner organizations may qualify for a discount. As of this writing, GEICO lists 70 educational organizations as partners that might qualify members for a car insurance teacher discount.

Requirements: Unlike auto insurance companies like Liberty Mutual, which offers customized auto insurance policies for all teachers, GEICO requires membership in one of its partner organizations.

What Sets Them Apart: Teacher discounts are available in all 50 states, including Washington, D.C.

Meemic

Policy Details: AAA-affiliated Meemic is an insurance company that provides educators with home, auto, and various other insurance products. Along with current educators, Meemic is also available to teacher’s aides, school administrators, school support staff, and retired teachers.

Requirements: Meemic coverage is only available to residents of Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

What Sets Them Apart: Founded in 1950 by a group of teachers, Meemic also offers car insurance discounts for newly certified teachers, paid-in-full policies, multi-policy, safe driving, new home, vehicle anti-theft, and senior citizens.

Farmers Insurance

Policy Details: Farmers Insurance offers discounts for school teachers and professors through their memberships to partner organizations. The actual discount depends on the state you live in and the selected car insurance coverage.

Requirements: Car insurance teacher discounts at Farmers require teachers to belong to a qualifying professional organization, like the AFT. Speak with an insurance agent to find out which organizations can give you access to a Farmers Insurance discount.

What Sets Them Apart: Founded in 1928, Farmers Insurance offers several products, including home, auto, renters, business, and life insurance. With more than 45,000 independent agents, it’s one of the largest auto insurance companies in the country. It operates in all 50 states.

Liberty Mutual

Policy Details: Liberty Mutual Insurance is the only company on this list that offers any specific numbers for their discount. They offer customized policies for teachers, including vandalism loss protection, personal property coverage, and collision coverage for events on school grounds or during school business hours. Their vandalism loss protection promises a $0 deductible on coverage up to $2,500 if a teacher’s vehicle is vandalized on school property or a school-sponsored event.

Requirements: You have to live in a state where the discount applies, although they don’t specify which states. Liberty Mutual doesn’t appear to require any membership to professional associations.

What Sets Them Apart: Headquarters in Boston, Liberty Mutual is one of the largest property and casualty insurance companies in the United States, with a presence in over 25 countries. A member of the Fortune 100, it offers several insurance products, such as auto, home, and life insurance.

Horace Mann

Policy Details: In addition to an educator discount, Horace Mann offers discounted coverage to any policyholder with multiple car insurance policies, direct paycheck premium deductions, or multiple lines of coverage with the company.

Requirements: Being an educator is enough to qualify for a Horace Mann car insurance teacher discount, but you may be eligible for other discounts if you have a membership to a partner educational association. A separate Educator Advantage program also offers benefits similar to Liberty Mutual‘s, such as covered vandalism losses and collision claims due to damages or injuries incurred at school property or during a school-sponsored event.

What Sets Them Apart: Founded in 1945 by two educators, Horace Mann Educators Corporation specializes in individual and group insurance products for teachers. Its insurance offerings include auto, homeowners, life insurance, and employee-paid benefits such as group life and disability.

Other Companies

These definitely aren’t the only insurance companies with a teacher discount. Direct Auto, Travelers, AAA, and more offer benefits for educators. If you’re unsure, ask your insurance company if they offer this discount.

What Other Ways Can Teachers Save on Auto Insurance?

If your current or desired provider offers no car insurance teacher discounts, you can enjoy comparable savings in other ways.

Two popular types of auto insurance discounts include bundling and safe driver discounts. Bundling refers to purchasing two or more policies from the same insurer, and many providers offer discounts to multi-policyholders. Good driver discounts are awarded to drivers who have maintained clean driving records for three to five years. Expect savings anywhere from 10% to 25% off your premium.

Outside of car insurance discounts, you can save by making changes to your policy. For example, lowering your deductible from $1,000 to $500 and lowering liability coverage limits may bring down your costs.
