Rate hikes yet again. Leaving USAA after 28 years.

They have significantly increased rates over the last few years. I have excellent credit, a clean driving record, and no claims, yet rates increased again this renewal by another $160 per 6 months. My rate has increased over $400 in the last 18 months to now $1562.68 for 6 months.

Our experience with USAA was horrendous. We lost our home to Hurricane Beryl. Having been a member for 27 years and never making any claims, this experience was indescribable. USAA, to whom we had paid $410.36 for years, had me doing their job. No tickets, no DUI, and a 20-year-old driver. That is too expensive for anyone. After Beryl, there was no power, which meant no electricity, no internet, no open stores, no food, and no gas. By the beginning of the second month, USAA tried to make Texas Wind and Air responsible, then FEMA, for paying for the broken roof, fallen trees, flooded home, and damaged AC. We decided to pack up and move on our own dime again. USAA is and always will be a ripoff. Very expensive to be a USAA member. Never again. We are just fine with AAA. Personally, the old ways of taking care of folks with insurance are only found and available with AAA. USAA has not stopped offering me a job with their claims department since Hurricane Beryl, though. I must know what I am doing better than my agent, who got fired for drinking and falsifying claims documents. There's more to the storyline with USAA. Plan on having to call them constantly to make sure they are at work.

Cheapest Mazda CX-5 car insurance for teens and drivers younger than 25

Teen drivers have the highest accident risk of any age group, and their risk of a fatal crash is three times as high as  drivers ages 20 and older.[6] Their lack of driving experience and riskier driving habits, like speeding or texting while driving, increase their risk of accidents.

Insurers charge teens higher rates to account for their elevated risks. But you can find more affordable rates with some companies.

The chart below features the cheapest companies for Mazda CX-5 drivers younger than 25, according to our data.

Cheapest Rates for Young Drivers

Cheapest Mazda CX-5 car insurance for seniors

Seniors often enjoy lower insurance rates because they drive less and tend to be more cautious behind the wheel. In fact, drivers in their 60s have the lowest rates of insurance claims of any age group.[7] Many drivers older than 55 also qualify for special discounts due to safe driving records and reduced annual mileage.

Still, seniors can get even lower rates by shopping around. To get you started, here’s a list of the cheapest insurers for senior Mazda CX-5 drivers, according to our data.

Mazda CX-5 Insurance Rates by Driving Record

Insurance companies pay close attention to your driving record. Even one speeding ticket or at-fault accident can lead to higher premiums since insurers see those violations as an indicator of higher risk.

But you can still find competitive rates for your Mazda CX-5 insurance, even with violations on your record. Some insurance companies even specialize in covering drivers with blemishes on their records.

Here’s how different driving records can affect your CX-5’s monthly premium, according to Compare.com data.

An at-fault accident can raise your Mazda CX-5 insurance costs substantially because it shows you’re a higher risk to insure. When you cause a crash, your insurer may raise your premiums to reflect the increased chance of future claims — and those higher rates can stick around for about three years, according to the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I).[8]

The chart below highlights the average monthly premiums for the cheapest companies for Mazda CX-5 drivers with an at-fault accident on their record, according to Compare.com data.

A DUI conviction affects you even more than a ticket or accident and makes you an even higher-risk driver in the eyes of insurers. That means companies will charge you higher rates for your Mazda CX-5.

And in many states, you’ll also need an SR-22 or FR-44 form to prove financial responsibility — both of which can add to your costs.

Deep Dive: What Affects Mazda CX-5 Car Insurance Rates?

Here are a few factors that can affect your Mazda CX-5 insurance rates:

  • Vehicle value: Choosing the more economical CX-5 2.5 S, which starts at $30,265, will save you more on car insurance than the pricey top-of-the-line $42,295 2.5 Turbo Signature.[9]

  • Repair costs: While Mazda isn’t a luxury brand, more expensive trims, a turbocharged engine, and all-wheel drive could increase repair bills and insurance costs.

  • Safety features and ratings: The CX-5 earned a 5-star National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) overall rating.[10] Its 2024 model is also an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick.[11] That, along with standard safety features like forward collision warning and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, helps lower insurance premiums.

How to Get Cheaper Car Insurance for Your Mazda CX-5

Use the following tips to save on Mazda CX-5 car insurance:

  • Check your mileage. Driving fewer miles could qualify you for a low-mileage discount. Signing up for pay-per-mile insurance can also help you reduce your CX-5 insurance costs.

  • Go paperless. Most insurers offer a paperless discount when you opt to receive your policy documents and bills electronically.

  • Bundle your insurance policies. Bundle your CX-5 insurance with home or renters to save up to 25% with a multi-policy discount.

  • Consider usage-based insurance. If you’re a safe driver, you can earn discounts with your insurer’s usage-based telematics program.
