The California State Automobile Association (CSAA) was formed in 1914 with the goal to protect drivers from financial fallout after a car accident. CSAA is an exclusive auto insurance provider to members of the American Automobile Association, better known as AAA. Some refer to CSAA insurance Group as AAA because it is a branch of the organization.
Although this AAA insurer may not be as well known to the general public as Allstate and Nationwide, AAA members in 23 states and the District of Columbia rely on them for their car insurance needs.
CSAA Insurance Coverage Options
Depending on where you live, here is a list of auto insurance coverage options provided by CSAA.
Collision Insurance
If your vehicle is damaged due to an auto accident, collision coverage helps to pay for the cost of repairs to your car. It also covers damages you may incur if you hit an object such as a mailbox, fence, or lamp post.
Comprehensive Insurance
This coverage provides an additional layer of protection by helping pay for non-collision-related damages to your car, such as fire, theft, vandalism , hail, a rock hitting your windshield or if you hit an animal.
Bodily Injury Insurance
If you are responsible for an auto accident that results in bodily injury to another person, bodily insurance will pay the medical costs. These expenses include doctor visits, emergency room treatment, physical or occupational therapy, and medications. If you are sued by the injured person for damages and need legal assistance, this coverage also pays your legal fees.
Property Damage Insurance
Unlike collision insurance, which covers damage to your property or the property of the other person, this coverage only pays for damage you cause to the other person.
Medical Payments Coverage
When you take your vehicle in for service, they insist that your mechanic or repair shop follow the original manufacturer’s procedures to ensure your car is fixed correctly.
Rental Car Reimbursement
If your event is being fixed or replaced, you can rent a vehicle like your own with no per-day limits. The coverage is above average at up to $5000 per occurrence.
Uninsured Motorists
This coverage pays for any damages to your vehicle if you’re involved in an accident with a driver who does not have car insurance. This includes damages to your car or if you’re the victim of a hit-and-run. These damages also extend to medical injuries and lost wages incurred by you and your passengers.
Underinsured Motorists
Unlike uninsured motorists’ insurance protection, underinsured motorists’ coverage helps with expenses when you’re hit by a driver who has car insurance but not enough to cover your bills. This includes lost wages, pain and suffering, medical bills, damage to your home and car, and funeral expenses for you or your passengers.
Rideshare Drivers Coverage
If you’re an Uber or Lyft driver, rideshare coverage adds an extra layer of protection on top of the standard liability-only insurance offered by the rideshare company. This optional add-on to the driver’s car insurance policy fills in the rideshare company’s policy gaps.
Gap Insurance Coverage
If your insurance company deems your car totaled or the cost to repair the vehicle is more than its value, gap insurance will pay the difference between what your insurance company pays and the remaining balance of your auto loan.
How to File a Claim With CSAA
If you’re involved in an accident, it’s essential to know what to do. Whether it’s a fender bender or a severe car crash, taking these steps can help keep you safe and make the claims process more manageable.
Check for Injuries
Being in a car accident can be emotional, stressful and painful if you’re injured. So, the first thing you want to do is take a minute to see whether you or your passengers have any injuries. Then you should call 911.
Move Your Vehicle
Turn on your hazard lights and drive your vehicle to a safe location that’s out of the flow of traffic.
Take Notes
Remembering all the details directly after an accident can be an impossible task. To make sure you have an accurate account of exactly what happened, who was involved, and what happened, document it. Suppose you have access to your mobile phone, record and or take pictures of everything, including the damage to both vehicles, the location of the accident, and the driver of the other car and any passengers. Also, document their driver’s license and insurance information if possible.
Keep Your Records Handy
After being involved in a car accident, the last thing you want to do is aimlessly search for documents you may or may not have readily available. To avoid this added stress, store pertinent documents in your glove box, including your vehicle’s registration and proof of insurance which should include your policy information. Also, consider adding contact information for next of kin if you are unresponsive.
Report the Accident
Contact CSAA to report the claim as quickly as possible. You can start the claims process via their mobile app, online via their website, or contact them 24/7 via phone.
Seek Medical Attention
Suppose your accident resulted in visible pain and injury, causing bleeding, bumps, or bruises. In that case, you’ll likely get immediate attention if not on the scene soon after at a local hospital. However, there are times when you will experience delayed emotional and physical trauma and shock after a car crash.
