Bad.
Cindy at the Allstate Canton Rd. office in Marietta, GA (and sometimes the Cartersville office) does not return phone calls. I canceled my auto and home insurance, due on 9/6/26, on 8/21. I called on 8/24/26 to see if I could keep the insurance through the Canton Rd. office. I spoke with someone there, and she said Cindy was on the phone and would have her call me back, but I never got a call. Previously, I spoke with Cindy at the Cartersville office about my rate increase, and she said she would look into it and call me back. That didn’t happen either. I felt like I was left with no option.

Most affordable car insurance for Atlanta drivers with an incident

Comparing car insurance quotes in Atlanta is the best way to find the cheapest coverage after an incident. Here are the cheapest companies for liability coverage in Atlanta, broken down by incident:

  • Cheapest car insurance for drivers in Atlanta with a clean driving record: Auto-Owners

  • Cheapest car insurance for drivers in Atlanta with a speeding ticket: Auto-Owners

  • Cheapest car insurance for drivers in Atlanta with an at-fault accident: Auto-Owners

  • Cheapest car insurance for drivers in Atlanta with a DUI: Auto-Owners

Atlanta drivers with a clean record typically qualify for the lowest rates. But many Atlanta drivers have traffic violations on their record. Our research shows that 4% of Atlanta drivers have a speeding ticket, 5% have been in an at-fault accident, and 1% have a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction.

Georgia is an at-fault state, meaning the driver responsible for a crash pays for the damage they cause. Drivers with prior incidents often pay higher premiums because past risky behavior usually increases the chance of future claims.

Atlanta Driving and Accident Statistics

Outdoor view of an entrance area with a large "Atlanta Braves" sign, featuring modern structures and a partly cloudy sky overhead.

Atlanta recorded 34,200 crashes in 2025, up from 33,376 crashes in 2024, according to Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) data.[4] Unsafe driving behaviors, such as distracted driving and speeding, are some of the most common causes of crashes in Atlanta.

The City of Atlanta Police reported 789 vehicle thefts so far in 2026, a 24% decline from 1,041 during the same period in 2025. These factors affect insurance costs, as more crashes increase the frequency of collision coverage claims. Theft risk also raises comprehensive coverage costs.

Georgia has historically had a high rate of uninsured motorists, according to the Insurance Research Council (IRC), making uninsured motorist coverage worth considering.

The effect Atlanta traffic has on car insurance rates

Atlanta’s heavy traffic increases drivers’ crash risk, especially along major corridors like Interstate 75, I-85, I-285, I-20, and the Downtown Connector. Atlanta ranks No. 7 for traffic congestion in the U.S. and No. 16 worldwide, according to INRIX. Drivers in the city lose an average of 65 hours every year to traffic delays.[5]

Congestion is especially common during weekday rush hours near major interchanges, where stop-and-go traffic increases the risk of accidents. Rain can increase your travel time by up to 50%. Increased collision risks contribute to Atlanta’s higher-than-average auto insurance costs.

Why Is Car Insurance in Atlanta So Expensive?

Car insurance in Atlanta is more expensive than in many other Georgia cities due to several local risk factors. The city’s heavy traffic, rising number of crashes, and higher vehicle theft rates increase the likelihood and cost of auto insurance claims. Insurers raise rates to offset that risk.

Atlanta drivers also spend more time in traffic than drivers in most U.S. cities, creating more opportunities for collisions during daily commutes.

The table below shows average monthly premiums in Atlanta and Georgia, according to Compare.com data.

Atlanta Car Insurance FAQs

Finding cheap Atlanta car insurance can be hard. Below, we answered some common questions to help you get the best policy at the lowest price.

What’s the best car insurance in Georgia?

The best car insurance for Atlanta drivers depends on your priorities. Auto-Owners offers the cheapest coverage in the city, on average. But the cheapest company isn’t always the best option for you. State Farm has good deals for safe drivers, and USAA offers some of the best rates for military members in Georgia.

Is auto insurance mandatory in Atlanta?

Yes. Atlanta drivers must comply with Georgia car insurance requirements. The state requires drivers to have $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident of bodily injury liability coverage, and $25,000 of property damage liability coverage.

Which is cheaper in Atlanta, GEICO or Progressive?

Progressive is typically cheaper than GEICO for liability-only and full coverage in Atlanta, according to Compare.com data. That said, your exact rate depends on factors like your age, driving record, vehicle, coverage choices, and ZIP code.

Is minimum car insurance coverage enough for Atlanta drivers?

Not typically. State-minimum coverage satisfies Georgia’s legal requirements, but it won’t pay to repair your own vehicle after a crash. It also likely isn’t enough to cover injuries or damage you cause. Many Atlanta drivers choose full coverage with higher liability limits due to the area’s heavy traffic and higher accident rates.

How can you lower your car insurance rates in Atlanta?

Comparing quotes from multiple insurers is one of the best ways to lower your car insurance rates in Atlanta. Drivers in Atlanta may also qualify for lower premiums by maintaining a clean driving record, bundling auto and homeowners insurance, or taking advantage of other discounts.
